He was drawn to drawing and painting
since childhood, as his mother did pencil sketches and
were living opposite the residence of of Late Nikhil
Biswas, one of the closing chapters of the Early Bengal
School of painting. But his passion developed at the
National Defence Academy where he got exposure to
development of art and its modernisation through its well
stocked library.
In 1976 he decided to leave academics and
pursue art against his parents wish. He landed up in his
home city Calcutta, got thrown out of home and did odd
jobs to survive for two years. Things did not work out, he
agreed to join Mining Engineering and was allowed back
home. On graduating he joined Coal India Ltd. as an
engineer and worked till 1984, when his second parent
died. He left the job, started painting, got married.
Need
for money got him freelancing as a designer with
corporates and advertising agencies. Simultaneously he did
Diploma in ‘Advertising & PR’ and ‘Applied Art’ to enhance
his monetary prospects. In 1991 he resigned from Nucleus
Advt. as Creative Director and moved to Delhi as faculty of
creative communication with Centre for Cross-Cultural
Communication. The passion for painting sustained him all
these years. During this journey of life he
has experimented in
figurative and now slowly moved towards abstracts. Since 1998
he is working in the field of abstract expressionism.
He
joined the mainstream of artist fraternity in 2000 and has
participated in many Regional, State and National
level exhibitions. He is already recognized by Lalit Kala Akademi,
Govt. of India as a professional artist and was awarded
the ‘Camlin Art Foundation National Award’ in 2002. |
